Handcrafted Financial Values LLC
Registered Investment Adviser
Our mission is to help socially-conscious people integrate their values with their finances and help them utilize their money – not only to achieve a great life – but as a tool to further the causes they support.
We strive to provide excellent comprehensive financial planning, risk profiling, and investment management services. If clients desire, we will work with them to incorporate values-based or socially responsible investing (SRI) principles into their financial plan and investments.
As an Oregon benefit company, we care about our impact on society and the environment. Besides operating sustainably, we endeavor to provide fiduciary financial advice to underserved segments of society through our fee structure, lack of asset minimum, and willingness to explore socially responsible investing options with all clients. In addition, Tim volunteers with CASH Oregon to provide free tax preparation services.
Tim Martin, JD, LLM
President & Financial Advisor
I started Handcrafted Financial Values for two reasons: (1) I love doing comprehensive financial planning, and (2) I want to help people invest according to their values.
Financial planning is the perfect combination of my interest in finance and economics, my interest in promoting sustainability, and my desire to help clients find solutions.
My career began as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps where I had the opportunity to explore the world and provide legal advice to Marines. I eventually developed a strong interest in sustainability and environmental conservation, which led me to obtain a Master of Laws (LLM) in Environmental Law from Lewis & Clark Law School. During this program and subsequent work at an environmental nonprofit, I learned about environmental economics and the possibility of making a true business case for conservation. Thus, I gravitated toward the business side of sustainability instead of the regulatory side.
I believe that the "business case" for sustainability and conservation will ultimately achieve greater and faster results than regulation. Thus, I am passionate about helping people invest in a way that promotes social responsibility through the market. While it is only one solution among many, I believe socially responsible investing can get us closer to a more just and sustainable world (see my blog for more thoughts on this topic).
I am originally from Ohio and graduated from Wheaton College (Illinois) and the University of Cincinnati College of Law (Ohio) before beginning active duty in the Marines. I lived in Virginia, Japan (Okinawa), and Rhode Island before settling in Portland, OR. I obtained a Certificate in Financial Planning from Boston University during the transition to my new career. I have passed the Series 65 exam and the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ exam and am working towards obtaining CFP® certification.
In my free time I enjoy running, playing volleyball, exploring Portland neighborhoods (including the endless coffee and craft beer options), exploring the rest of Oregon, and taking lots of walks with my wife and our Westie.
